Filters

FiberOx® reticulated ceramic foam filters are produced by Fiber-Ceramics Inc., a Joy-Mark affiliate. Fully sintered refractory, open cell, porous ceramic structures composed of zirconia-toughened alumina. Cream to light beige in color, they contain no phosphates or clay or chemical binders. FiberOx® filters are used at in-gates, in runners, in tundishes, and in pouring cups for investment, sand, shell and permanent mold foundry processes. FiberOx® filters are resistant to thermal shock. They have been proven to be effective in non-ferrous and iron applications at pouring temperatures up to 2800 degrees Fahrenheit.

FiberOx® filters provide the following benefits:

  • Filter out metallic and non-metallic impurities from molten metal streams
  • Reduce oxide forming turbulent flow
  • Increase metal fluidity
  • Eliminate inclusion defects
  • Improve casting quality, machine-ability and mechanical properties
  • Reduce scrap and salvage operations
Available in a wide variety of shapes

FiberOx® filters heat rapidly with little cooling effect on pouring temperature because of their low thermal mass. FiberOx® filters are easily wetted with a 2 to 6 inch-pouring head, and their superior strength eliminates the need for a metal screen backup.

Optimum filtering results occur when the filter is installed at the in-gate. The more reactive the metal, the closer the filter needs to be to the pattern cavity. For less critical or less reactive applications placement in runners or pouring cups may offer a more convenient and economical alternative. For investment casting, FiberOx® filters are simple to infiltrate with wax for insertion. Normal dewaxing and burnout procedures can be followed.

A fine-grain reticulated matrix characterizes FiberOx® filters. Uniformly sized spherical pores connect with each other through windows in their walls of about half the pore diameter. The tortuous flow of this structure attracts and captures molten slag and other impurities, resulting in superior filtering efficiency compared to other filter styles on the market. In many cases, smaller filters can be used.

A wide assortment of standard squares, rectangles, discs and 22 ½ degree tapered discs are readily available.

Fiber-Ceramics can produce custom shapes in different pore sizes for your particular application. In many cases, prototype pieces can be quickly fabricated and the design and performance approved before committing to expensive tooling costs. Call our sales office for a quote.
